Hymen Lipman's patent for a "Combination of Lead Pencil and Eraser" appears below. The top diagram shows a normal view of Lipman's pencil. The point marked "B" is the lead tip, and the point marked "C" is the eraser. Notice that, unlike most of today's attached erasers, Lipman's eraser could be sharpened. The second diagram shows a cross-section of the pencil, with a groove (marked "A") for the rubber eraser. These images are from the U.S. Patent Office. (The images might take a moment to load.)
